ABOUT
Kate Russell, born in South Bend, Indiana, and raised in Northeastern Pennsylvania, developed a passion for the arts early in life. She pursued Art at Indiana University, and after a period focused on family life in Asheville, NC, she rekindled her artistic pursuits. Relocating to Huntsville in 2013, she volunteered at the Saint Jude clinic in Huntsville hospital, painting with children undergoing cancer treatments. This experience led her to become the Artist in Residence with the AIM program. Her journey took her to New Mexico in 2021, where she now creates botanical collages and earth pigment works, inspired by the local scenery.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I aspire to uniquely capture the essence of nature, particularly in my latest works featuring botanical elements and handmade earth pigments. I find deep satisfaction in the meditative process, gathering materials from the Bosque, then washing, drying, pressing, and meticulously assembling them on canvas. My use of earth pigments, collected and processed to vary in texture and color, enhance the depth and authenticity of my pieces. Integrating nature's offerings and art, my creations, which often include indigo plant dye for vibrant skies, embody a harmonious blend of healing and beauty, inviting viewers into a three-dimensional natural tableau.
